Conclave on Future of Libraries

About the Conclave on “Future of Libraries”

As technology and scholarly content creation continue to evolve rapidly, libraries face significant transformations driven by changing user behaviors, the rise of misinformation, and the need for redesigned spaces. Especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, footfalls to libraries increased significantly, prompting libraries to take action to increase seating capacity, efficient space management,  embrace new publishing models, incorporate advanced technologies, and foster collaborative and inclusive environments. As essential services, they are integrating digital platforms, leveraging AI, and adopting innovative frameworks for scholarly communication, ensuring they continue to meet the needs of diverse user groups.

This conference will explore the key challenges and opportunities libraries face in the digital age, focusing on how they are reinventing themselves to remain integral to education, research, and culture. As essential institutions for societal progress, the event will showcase innovative services and strategies that libraries are adopting to meet contemporary demands, while outlining roadmaps to address the evolving needs of future generations. The conference will also expand its scope to consider libraries as a public good—whether digital, traditional, or hybrid offering a comprehensive perspective on their transforming role in the 21st century.

The Institute:

Established in 1958, IIT Bombay was the first to be set up with foreign assistance. The funds from UNESCO came as Roubles from the then Soviet Union. In 1961 Parliament decreed the  IITs as  ‘Institutes of National Importance'. Since then, IITB has grown from strength to strength to emerge as one of the top technical universities in the world.

Central Library:

Central Library is an outstanding contribution of IIT Bombay’s “Culture of Excellence” to the world of scholarship. Housed in an independent five-storied building, it holds one of the best collections of knowledge resources both in print and electronic form in engineering, sciences, technology, arts and humanities, and social sciences. The library is valued by its users not just for the facilities, nor for the strength of deep, relevant collections, but rather for the ways the library understands their needs, and supports their forward-looking academic and research mission through user focused services, highly skilled staff, and easy-to-use collections. The library has galvanized itself to successfully engage its users in a multifaceted information environment in order to remain their valuable partners in learning and research.
